THE NIGHTLY CHILL
By Steve Arviso
Pale Horse (Act 3, Scene 1).
FIGHT THE DAWN!
As the sunlit sanity of the waking world burns the night to ash,
embrace the unbound madness of your wildest dreams,
laugh into the endless abyss of your darkest fantasies,
and rage against the coming dawn.
The Nightly Chill is the unstable experience of the mind and madness of Steve Arviso (@AmoralCrackpot). Mon-Fri. Ish.
- PALE HORSE (ACT 3, SCENE 1)
- THE MIXTAPE
In hindsight, tonight’s addition is really more the first scene of ACT TWO than ACT 3, SCENE 1. Because PALE HORSE really is more a two-act tale than it is four (meaning ACT TWO was really more just ACT ONE, PART 2). But I’m writing this as I go, so now I’m stuck with a little miscalculation for now. And I’m sure I’ll forget to correct that later too.
Aw, well. At least it’s coming along nicely!

A dark tale of young love tragically cut short and supernatural revenge. Continued.
Previously, in Act Two of “Pale Horse”…
SOUNDSCAPE: THE PEACEFUL AMBIENCE OF A BUSTLING, OTHERWORLDLY TRAIN STATION SURROUNDED BY AN ENDLESS STRETCH OF DESERT.
STATION MANAGER WAKES BENNY, DEEP ASLEEP ON A BENCH.
Sir? Excuse me, Sir. Train’ll be arriving shortly.
DISTANT SHRILL OF A TRAIN WHISTLE.
Am I dead?
A DISTANT GUNSHOT RINGS OUT ACROSS THE DESERT.
(It sinks in.)
He shot me…
A COYOTE HOWLS.
The man you spoke of…
I will find him.
SCENE 1. THE BOUNTY.
SOUNDSCAPE: THE UNCOMFORTABLE ATMOSPHERE OF A COZY 1950S HOME OCCUPIED BY A YOUNG WOMAN AND THE OLDER BROTHER WHO MURDERED HER BOYFRIEND IN COLD BLOOD.
NATALIE PREPARES DINNER IN THE KITCHEN.
(OFF.) (Calling. Calm, but dominant.)
Is my lunch ready?
NATALIE IS TRAPPED IN A ROOM WITH A HUNGRY BEAR.
It’s on the table.
CLARENCE INSPECTS THE BAG.
FOR A MOMENT, CLARENCE IS HUMAN AGAIN.
Are these Ma’s persimmon cookies?
You know, I promised her I’d look after you best I could. And I ain’t gonna let any harm come to you. Even when you bring it upon yourself.
A BEAT. THEN…
CLARENCE CLOSES, CRUMPLES BAG.
I’m all you’ve got left now…
CLARENCE APPROACHES NATALIE FROM BEHIND, UNCOMFORTABLY CLOSE.
(CONT’D.) (Knows the answer he wants to hear.)
You understand that, don’t you?
AN UNCOMFORTABLE SILENCE.
HONK-HONK! THE CRUISER’S HORN, CURBSIDE.
That’s Jimmy. I gotta go.
(Turns to leave, stops.)
I’ll be home late.
CLARENCE GRABS HIS KEYS, LEAVES, SLAMS DOOR BEHIND HIM.
NATALIE FLINCHES, GASPS AT THE SOUND. SHE CAN BREATH AGAIN, FEEL AGAIN. AND THE TEARS WON’T STOP COMING.
